المسيحية كدين رسمي للإمبراطورية الرومانية

يتناول المقال الأحداث المختلفة المقترحة كإعلان رسمي للمسيحية كدين للدولة: مرسوم ميلانو المعروف الذي أصدره الإمبراطور قسطنطين (٣٠٥–٣٣٧) في عام ٣١٣، والمجمع المسكوني الأول الذي عُقد في نيقية عام ٣٢٥ والمرسوم الذي أصدره الإمبراطور ثيودوسيوس الأول (٣٧٩–٣٩٥) في تسالونيكي في ٢٨ شباط ٣٨٠ (دراسات كاثوليكية ١٦: ١.2). وعلى أساس تحليلات المصادر التاريخية والأدبية، اتّضح إن المجمع المسكوني الأول هو الذي حوّل الإمبراطورية الوثنية إلى إمبراطورية مسيحية. يحلل المقال أيضاً اعتناق المسيحية من قبل الشعوب خارج الإمبراطورية الرومانية في القرون الأولى بعد المسيح. ويُظهر أنه في حين كانت عملية اعتناق الإمبراطورية الرومانية تدريجية، تخللتها عمليات ترميم مؤقتة للوثنية، فقد روت المصادر التاريخية إعلان الإيمان بالمسيح كدين للدولة في أماكن أخرى كنتيجة لمعجزة لم تترك مجالاً لفكرة ثانية. وهذا يعني أنه في حين تحوّلت الطبقة الحاكمة للإمبراطورية تدريجياً إلى المسيحية، فإن الطبقات الحاكمة في كل الممالك الأخرى اتّبعت مشاعرها الشخصية وانتهازيتها الاجتماعية والسياسية، الأمر الذي أدى إلى اختيار سياسي وثقافي دقيق للتحالف مع أقوى دولة مسيحية. ولم تتحول أي دولة أو بلد إلى المسيحية قبل الإمبراطورية الرومانية.
